For two moths the parents of a drug-addicted girl chained her to a radiator to keep her away from a dangerous life on the streets of Bronx, New York.
Last month, the police went to the Marreros’ apartment and found a young girl chained to an iron pipe. Linda Marrero was chained during nights because of her crack addiction problem. During the last two years, Linda disappeared into the New York nights. She disappeared days, then weeks, returning home being drugged and in very bad conditions. Her parents warned her not to do it again. One day in July, after Linda had stayed away for a month, two drug dealers appeared with her at gunpoint. The drug dealers ordered her mother to repay them $ 100 that Linda had stolen from them.
After trying everything, such as sending her to her parent’s house in Puerto Rico, rehabilitation programs and asking help to social services without obtaining positive results, the parents decided to chain her daughter to a radiator.
The police received an anonymous call. When the police officers entered into the apartment, they ordered the Marreros not to move and immediately arrested them. Neighbours and citizens’ opinions were divided; some believed that they were criminals, while others considered them heroes.
The judge ordered the parents to pay a fine of $ 100,000. But, the lawyer asked the judge to reduce the fine. However, the investigation continues, but Linda asked the judge not to send her parents to prison, who she said were acting in her best interests.
