Two days ago the National Convention condemned Louis XVI to death, his execution was yesterday.

Louis spent all yesterday's evening saying goodbye to his wife and children. The following day dawned cold and rainy. Louis woke up at five. At eight o'clock a guard arrived to escort the former king on a two-hour carriage ride to the Place of the Revolution, in Paris. Accompanying Louis, before his death, was an Irish Catholic priest and confessor of Louis XVI.a priest whose name was Henry Essex Edgeworth.
The execution did not go as planned, however everything went well. After initially refusing to have his hands tied, Louis XVI relented when the executioner proposed to use his handkerchief instead of rope. Later, his hair was cut and the collar of his shirt was removed. After being led on the platform, Louis tried to give a speech but the noise of the various drums made it difficult to be understood. He was then laid on the bench, the collar closed over his neck and then the blade of the guillotine came down.

Charles-Henri Sanson, who was in charge of the death penalty, declared the following:
He came forward to speak, but there were shouts to the executioners to get on with their work. As he was strapped down, he exclaimed "My people, I die innocent!" Then, turning towards his executioners, Louis XVI declared "Gentlemen, I am innocent of everything of which I am accused. I hope that my blood may cement the good fortune of the French."

The slaughter of the Jacobins has worsen even more, today, the city of Paris has woken up silent and with the empty streets, nothing like this has ever happened before, and the nobility, as well as the clergy, is extremely scared.
